How to Save WhatsApp Status Videos and Photos (2026)

WhatsApp Statuses disappear after 24 hours. This guide shows you exactly how to save any WhatsApp Status video or photo to your phone gallery before it expires — for free on both iPhone and Android.

Method 1: Android — File Manager Method (Easiest)

This method works on all Android phones and requires no extra app.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp and view the status you want to save. You must view it first — WhatsApp only saves statuses you have watched.

Step 2: Open your phone's File Manager app (also called Files, My Files, or ES File Explorer depending on your phone).

Step 3: Enable Show hidden files in your file manager settings (usually under the three-dot menu or Settings).

Step 4: Navigate to: Internal Storage → WhatsApp → Media → .Statuses

Step 5: Find the video or photo you want to keep. Long press it and tap Copy or Move.

Step 6: Paste it into your DCIM or Pictures folder. It will now appear in your gallery permanently.

Method 2: iPhone — Screen Recording Method

iPhone does not expose the WhatsApp Status folder, so we use screen recording instead.

Step 1: Add Screen Recording to your Control Centre. Go to Settings → Control Centre → tap the + next to Screen Recording.

Step 2: Open WhatsApp and navigate to the Status you want to save — but don't view it yet.

Step 3: Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open Control Centre and tap the Screen Recording button (circle with a dot). A 3-second countdown will start.

Step 4: Go back to WhatsApp and view the status while recording. When the status ends, tap the red recording bar at the top and tap Stop.

Step 5: Open the Photos app. Find the screen recording and use Edit → Crop to trim away the phone status bar if needed.

How Long Do WhatsApp Statuses Last?

WhatsApp Statuses last exactly 24 hours from when they were posted. After 24 hours they are permanently deleted from WhatsApp's servers. Make sure to save any status you want to keep within this window.

Why can't I find the .Statuses folder?
